Production Process of Molybdenum Rods

The manufacturing of molybdenum rods adopts mature powder metallurgy combined with high-temperature plastic forming technology, which can produce high-density, high-purity molybdenum products with stable internal structure. The whole process is divided into six core steps.
First is raw material preparation. High-purity molybdenum powder with low impurity content is selected as the basic material. Workers conduct strict screening, mixing and deoxidation treatment to remove trace oxygen, iron, silicon and other harmful impurities, laying a foundation for the high performance of finished rods.
The second step is isostatic pressing. Uniform molybdenum powder is filled into special rubber molds, then placed in an isostatic pressing machine. Under balanced high pressure from all directions, loose powder is compacted into solid molybdenum billets. This method avoids uneven density caused by single-side pressing and prevents internal cracks.
Third is high-temperature sintering. Green billets are sent to a hydrogen sintering furnace. Under a hydrogen protective atmosphere at temperatures above 2000°C, powder particles bond tightly through diffusion. Sintered molybdenum blanks gain high density and initial mechanical strength, and hydrogen atmosphere effectively prevents surface oxidation during heating.
Fourth is hot forging. Sintered blanks are heated to the forging temperature in a heating furnace, then repeatedly forged by hydraulic forging equipment. Multiple passes of upsetting and drawing refine internal grains, eliminate tiny pores and improve overall compactness. Forging greatly enhances tensile strength and ductility of semi-finished molybdenum rods.
Fifth is precision rolling and straightening. Forged blanks go through multi-pass hot rolling or cold rolling to reach target diameters. After rolling, rods have slight bending, so straightening machines are used to correct straightness to meet industrial tolerance standards.
The last step is finishing and inspection. Products are processed via grinding, polishing or peeling to remove surface oxide layers and defects. Finally, full inspections on size, surface finish, purity and mechanical properties are carried out. Qualified molybdenum rods are cleaned, packaged and delivered for high-temperature furnace, electronics and metallurgy industries.
